It seems there is not a perfect understanding between the Indian selectors and MS Dhoni in regards to fast bowling.
While, Dhoni is keen on the fact that the skilful bowlers should be given more exposure, the selectors want to back the speed.
The test squad that has been announced for the away Sri Lanka series includes the likes of Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron.
Umesh and Varun are, by no means, less talented than the other names in the Indian pace stocks, but, in the games that they have played so far, they have been quite erratic.
And, that’s why in Bangladesh, Dhoni, went public in expressing his disappointment at the development of those guys as fast bowlers.
Although, Dhoni did not directly take a dig at anyone, but, he did say a couple of times in that particular press conference that in the future he would like to see skill being given more preference over pace.
But, the way the selectors have again showed their confidence in genuine speed, one can assume that they do not quite agree with Dhoni on that front.
It was even asked to Sandeep Patil, the chairman of the BCCI selection committee, what he would like to make of Dhoni’s statements that he made in Bangladesh.
Replying to that, Patil hinted that he and his colleagues still have their faith intact in Umesh and Varun and regardless of what Dhoni said, these two guys are going to get more opportunities in future.
Patil was quoted as saying, “As the captain of the One Day team, MS Dhoni said something and he was probably within his rights to do that. There are no objections from our side as far as that is concerned.”
“This is the best set of bowlers that we could have selected for the series keeping the Sri Lankan pitches and conditions in mind. Hopefully, the returns will be good.”
