Gelephu Higher Secondary School Lifts The Trophy
Gelephu Higher Secondary School became the first school to win the first ever school cricket tournament held in the sarpang dzongkhag today when they beat arch rival Gelephu Lower Secondary School by 107 runs during the final of Sarpang Dzongkhag Under-19 School Tournament where 4 teams from Sarpang Dzongkhag Participated in month long tournament organized by Sarpang Dzongkhag in association with Bhutan Cricket.
The Final match showed some uncertainty amongst the organizer and the school players with the monsoon rain throughout the week, cricket enthusiasts and the players praying for a favorable weather condition on the final. The Final match was delayed for an hour due to rain as it kept drizzling at the start, at 9:30 am the rain fade away leaving a gloomy weather condition and the outfield still wet for the match, the umpire had a closer look and the match started at 10 am in the morning.
Gelephu Lower Secondary school didn’t hesitate to bowl first in the wet condition which suits the fast bowler and outfield at the slower side for the runs. Gelephu Lower Secondary opening bowler started well in the beginning giving less runs but they couldn’t restrict the flows of wides and byes, with early breakthrough and couple of wickets down, Gelephu Higher Secondary School were under sever pressure with 33 runs on the board and 3 wicket down at the end of 6th over.
Nim Tshering the man on a mission made all the difference with 70 runs partnership with Tshering clear the score of Gelephu Higher Secondary school to 100 in 27th overs as both the batsmen played beautiful shots and teammates applauds their valuable partnership, Nim Tshering who made 33 runs of 26 balls include four fours while … played exactly what the doctor has ordered, as he kept rotating the strike and let Deepak go for the runs. There are few sixes and fours in the innings as Gelephu Lower Secondary School were too good for the ball to roll over the boundary rope. Nim Tshering was trapped LBW while trying to play across on Dorji and to the relief of the Gelephu Lower Secondary players and teacher.
Gelephu Lower Secondary School fought back and took quick wickets after the fell of danger batsmen Deepak, the no 6, no7 and no 8 batsmen just walked in and out of the ground, jubilant Gelephu L.S.School all fired up with some good bowling and fielding but were shot lived as the no 9th batsmen, Migma made them pay for the drop catch when he was dropped twice in single figure and to hit two huge sixes and couple fours, Gelephu Lower Secondary couldn’t do much as the score ticked 150 up in the board. Migma was caught in midwicket after scoring valuable 28 runs and the tail Enders added useful 15 runs to be all out for 168 runs in 27th over.As Gelephu Lower Secondary started the run chase, it looked like a big mammoth in front of a tiny mouse as the confident Gelephu Higher Secondary School openers kept a tight line and length and restricted the flow of runs, the lower secondary opening batsmen couldn’t get off to a good starts as they were put under sever pressure by the Gelephu Higher Secondary School bowlers. As over keep finishing and run rate at low, a perfect opening spell by the Gelephu Higher Secondary Bowler removed the opening batsmen in the 4th over and to topple the top order batsmen thereafter for a mere 30 runs.
With 66 balls and 114 runs to win and two wickets remaining, Gelephu Lower Secondary School players couldn’t resist the fired up bowlers of The Higher School as they crush and ran out couple of Batsmen with brilliant diving throw. With the weather still perfect for couple of over for a exciting cricket, Gelephu Lower Secondary Players were totally taken aback by the seaming bowlers of G.H.S.School, runs were hard to come and at other end wicket tumbled as they were bowled out for 62 runs and a well deserved Gelephu Higher School players rush to congratulate each other after the fall of last wicket and a famous hurdle for a couple of second to mark the victory.
The Final saw the Gelephu Dungpa as chief guest and other notable dignitaries Mr Tsewang Tobgay, the District Education Officer, Mr Gyaltshen Dukpa, the Honoble Vice President of Bhutan India friendship Association, Gelephu Local Chapter and Ugyen Rabten, the Secretary General were the other dignitaries present.
A Small presentation ceremony was held where Chief Guest awarded the Players with Medal and Trophies. Nim Tshering from Gelephu Higher Secondary School was adjudged the Man of the Match for his brilliant innings of 33 runs and Dorji from Gelephu Lower Secondary School was adjudged the Man of the Tournament for his 52 runs not out against Sarpang Middle Secondary School and 9 wickets in the Tournament
The Tournament boosted the young talents of the Sarpang schools and ablaze the flame of cricket in the Sarpang District schools. “From a bare foot to the cricket shoes, Sarpang schools are ready for big tournament in near future”.
