This is the first time a sporting body is being helped by a private organisation. The future of Bhutanese cricket received a helping hand with the Bhutan Tourism Corporation Limited (BTCL) signing an agreement with Bhutan Cricket Council Board (BCCB) yesterday to support the council with Nu 100,000 for three years.
This is the first time a private organisation is supporting a sporting body. All sports federations are run on government budget and aid from foreign organisations.
“We’re happy to be the first. Hopefully this is just the start,” said BTCL managing director Thinley Wangchuk Dorji, who is also president of BCCB. “We hope to help in every small way and play an active role in supporting sports.”
The federation will use the fund to enrol potential but financially disadvantaged cricket talents to pursue their higher education both within and outside the country.
“It’s the first MoU signed for the benefit and development of organised sport in Bhutan,” BOC secretary general Sonam Karma Tshering said. “We hope such generosity will be an example, and many other private and corporate stakeholders will come forward.”
BCCB chief executive officer, Jigme N Norbu, said, “players will be motivated and will strive even more.”
