Thimphu: The Under -19 Women’s team preparation for the ACC Women’s Twenty20 Championship to be held in Malaysia in July 2009 began from May month and with just three weeks to go for the Tournament, the girls are being given intensive training on batting, bowling and physical fitness by Coach Damber Singh Gurung.10 out of 14 players are based in Thimphu while 4 are from Sarpang District. This year school girl’s tournament saw new sensational of spinner in Sonam Zam who has been outstanding throughout the tournament and has been phenomenal in the practice.

This will be second time Bhutan National Women’s Team will be participating in the ACC International Tournament and BCCB is confident for a good show by the girls, “we are sure to give every country a good fight looking at their performance in the domestic tournament and in the practice” said Jigme N Norbu, CEO BCCB. Bhutan is Group in A Alongside Champion Nepal, Thailand, Singapore, Qatar and Iran.

30 Probable Under-19 Girls from Dechencholing Middle School, Yangchenphug Higher S. School and Lungtenzampa did first ever Physical Fitness Test conducted by Bhutan Cricket. It was learning fitness test for the girls as they have been doing for the first time. “It has been an challenging fitness test for us” said one of the 30 probable. The probable girls were given weekly coaching by the coaches. With the monsoon weather prohibiting the coaching, the final 14 Bhutan Under-19 National Women team will be finalized by the end of October, said Damber Singh Gurung, Youth National Coach.

Roger Binny conducted a coaching session during his latest visit as the country development officer but it was a different session from all previous sessions and this group comprised of only girls. They were put through various drills and Roger was assisted by the local coaches in the three hour long session. Bhutan cricket has introduced women’s cricket in the districts of Thimphu and Sarpang.

Bhutan Women’s cricket Coaching is no far behind the Men’s as the Local Coaches Sonam Tobgay and Bikash Gurung Provides Coaching Camp to Dechencholing Middle Secondary School Girls, The Coaching Camp are held in Weekdays where Both The Coaches Give Coaching every Tuesday and Friday After Hours hours and on Saturday the Girls are then given Coaching in the Thimphu Cricket ground Where Coach Damber Singh Gurung along with Senior Players hands coaching Skills program to the Girls.

The Girls are Keen on playing cricket and very much interested in the Game as they come forward to know new things Said Sonam Tobgay. Indeed Women cricket is picking up in School where young Girls are more into cricket. Such Similar Coaching is organized in the Gelephu District where Coach Dorji Dakpa Hands over the Coaching to the School Girls.

The Main aim is to prepare for the ACC Under-19 Women Cricket Tournament to be held in 2008, The date is yet to Confirm from the Asian Cricket Council but Bhutan has already confirm it’s Participation in the Tournament. (more…)
